Speller Metcalfe has been announced as the contractor for Active Nation’s £4.5m extension of Filton Leisure Centre in Bristol. Working alongside architects Watson Batty, the modernising and integrated redesign is due to be delivered by autumn 2023.
The extensive package of works includes the demolition of existing reception and changing areas, and the construction of a new extension that will expand, and focus facilities around the existing swimming pool.
The extension will provide a new single point of entry to the leisure centre, a new reception, café and soft play area, both wet and dry side changing rooms, and a viewing area beside the pool.
“These works will have a hugely positive impact on the experience of our centre users” says Stuart Martin, managing director of Active Nation. “This investment will see the facilities consolidated and modernised to provide an activity hub much more in-tune with the modern needs of our community whilst also futureproofing the provision.”
An adjacent pub, the Rate Payers Arms, will be demolished on completion of the works, to make room for more car parking, landscaping and an external changing room for football pitch users.
Mark Hudgeon, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe said: “We are delighted to be delivering this extension scheme for Active Nation. We have completed several leisure centre projects in recent years, ranging from refurbishments to large new centres, so we are excited to begin on this site and will be ensuring that customers are at the heart of the leisure centre.”
During construction works, the swimming pool provision will remain open and leisure facilities will continue to be accessible for the community.
