Britannia Leisure Centre opens to the public

Britannia Leisure Centre has opened in Hackney, marking the completion of the first part of the biggest public sector investment in the area in a generation.

Morgan Sindall Construction delivered the project for Hackney Council. Procured through the Southern Construction Framework, the scheme forms part of the first phase of a mixed-use community development located next to Shoreditch Park, alongside a new secondary school with sixth form and residential properties.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, the four storey centre includes a six-lane, 25m main pool with access to a steam room and sauna and a 20m by 10m training pool with movable floor and sensory lighting installation. There is also a splash ‘leisure water’ facility with water features and a water flume.

Other facilities include a large fitness suite with five flexible studio spaces, a six-court indoor sports hall, four squash courts, two five-a-side football pitches and two tennis courts on the roof of the building, along with a café and public toilets for use by the local community and people visiting Shoreditch park.

The centre is operated by Better, the charitable social enterprise that runs all council leisure centres, with affordable prices for local people and discounted memberships for those on low incomes.
