Table Tennis England is working with shopping centres nationwide to host the governing body’s award-winning Ping Pong Parlours.
In recent months, Parlours have opened in various locations across England, and with the introduction of Table Tennis England’s Area Manager network, the body hopes to ensure parlour presence in each of its seven focus areas.
Ping Pong Parlours are informal table tennis venues for people to pop into and play, free of charge and without having to book, and typically occupy empty retail spaces in shopping centres.
They are open to everyone, but are particularly aimed at those who would not normally play sport, and provide people with an introduction to the sport in a relaxed, informal setting in a place where they already spend time.
There are also opportunities for clubs, leagues and coaches to engage with players at Parlours and offering further playing opportunities as well as hosting sessions within the centres.
A Ping Pong Parlour has returned to Harrogate’s Victoria Shopping Centre. Set up by Harrogate Business Improvement District, the facility is open seven days a week during retail hours and includes four table tennis tables with bats and balls provided.
“This is ever popular with workers and students alike and evidentially brings people into town. Table tennis is a great sport, and anyone can play it, no matter how young or how old,” said Matthew Chapman, Harrogate BID manager.
