Fitness is one of the fastest-growing leisure segments

More than six million Brits are now members of private health and fitness clubs, according to the latest research from Mintel.

Over the last five years, private health and fitness gym membership has grown by 15 per cent, rising from 5.3 million in 2014 to 6.1 million in 2019.

Other findings from the Mintel's Health and Fitness Clubs UK 2019 Report reveal that:

  • Total revenue for the UK private health and fitness club market is estimated to have reached nearly £3.4bn in 2019, growing by 4.1 per cent since 2018.

  • It is one of the fastest-growing leisure segments.
    Some 18 per cent of UK adults currently use a private health and fitness club, compared with
    15 per cent in 2018.

  • Classes are a key reason why many attend private gyms.
    Almost 58 per cent of Brits say classes are the main reason they go to a health and fitness club.
    64 per cent say group classes help them put in more effort.
    75 per cent of consumers say the instructors play a key role in how much they like a club.
