Kaset Skatepark in Kings Lynn has undergone an extensive upgrade, the third skatepark to have been revamped under a partnership between Skateboard GB and social enterprise VIY (Volunteer It Yourself).
Home to Joe Hinson, who recently won the National Championships, the project at Kaset Skatepark included building a fun-box, rail, wall-ride and grind block from scratch.
Combining volunteering with DIY/construction, VIY challenges young people aged 14-24 to learn trade and construction skills, whilst helping renovate indoor skateparks.
A number of learners worked with VIY mentors and 414 Ramps on all aspects of the build, benefiting from City & Guilds accreditation in carpentry alongside mentoring.
Flo Skatepark (Nottingham) and LS-Ten (Leeds) have also benefited from the scheme, with both sites experiencing growth in usage numbers following their refurbishments.
“The partnership between Skateboard GB and VIY is really exciting, with skateparks directly benefitting from improvements and helping young people who can gain valuable skills in the process,” said James Hope-Gill, CEO at Skateboard GB.
Kaset Skatepark is now open to the public with open skateboard sessions and coaching opportunities.
