Occupational therapists to help deliver inclusive activity

An initiative between the London Borough of Waltham Forest, GLL and recreational social enterprise Sport For Confidence is bringing a range of inclusive sports programmes to the area.

An occupational therapist and sports coach will work together to deliver bespoke physical activity sessions for people who are unable to access mainstream sports. Activities include Boccia and multi sports classes.

The sessions are designed and delivered by Sport For Confidence. They take place at the Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre operated by GLL. Funding has been awarded by The London Borough of Waltham Forest.

Removing the barriers to inclusive sports

“People with a learning disability can face additional challenges just walking through the doors of a leisure centre. They may lack the confidence and support they need or be unsure if the environment and activities are right for them,” says Sinead Kelly, the occupational therapist responsible for delivering the programme.

“Through working with community groups including local charities, care homes, clinical commissioning groups, GPs and community nursing teams, we can make the reasonable adjustments needed to remove the barriers and provide an inclusive service which meets individual needs.”
