DEWSBURY SPORTS CENTRE – RECREATIONAL COATINGS

Kirklees Active Leisure approached us to provide a flooring solution for two areas of their Dewsbury Sports Centre gym. The timescale for the project was 1 week.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The gym areas KAL needed us to provide a flooring solution for included the functional zone and free weights area. KAL were already familiar with our work as they had previously employed our services on several of their sites. These included the John Smiths Stadium and Huddersfield Leisure Centre.

Although the functional area was fairly simple to specify, the free weights area was a different story. There were obvious signs of sub floor damage in the dumbbell area and the old floor wasn’t doing much in terms of protection. We had the added uncertainty of not knowing the full extent of damage because of the plywood layer that was hiding the concrete sub floor.

We had to adopt a ‘think on our feet’ attitude in anticipation of what we would uncover on day 1 of the project.

THE INSTALLATION

We installed a 10mm red fleck rubber flooring in the functional area. This provided a continuation in floor finish from the main gym area to keep it consistent. We also installed a RECSystems Premium Sports Carpet track with integrated KAL logo in a vibrant red colour.

In the free weights area we uncovered a seriously damaged sub floor. Our original specification had to be adjusted to include solid steel plates which would cover the worse areas. This provided a good base for the 45mm rubber tiles which are designed to absorb impact and have an easy to clean EPDM rubber surface.

We finished the free weights area with bespoke stainless steel ramps to provide a safe transition from the main gym.

THE RESULTS

Although we encountered issues in the free weights area, we completed the project on time. We consulted with KAL every step of the way to advise them of their options so they could make an informed decision.
